Created by Vietnamese architecture practice Farming Architects, VAC Library in Hanoi is a large wooden climbing frame that sustains its own miniature ecosystem – and features a built-in library.
It was designed as a way for children to learn about how ecosystems work and sustain themselves, using solar-powered aquaponics to maintain a small farm of vegetables, koi carp and chickens. The modular wooden grid design allows it to be recreated in other urban environments, scaling up or down according to the space available.
As kids climb and play, they observe and learn about the processes of aquaponics, animal care and growing vegetables, all feeding into an impressive hands-on learning experience. The immersive space fosters an understanding of sustainability and ecology from a young age, combining learning with fun and inspiring a new generation of sustainably-minded citizens.
