Vertical farm Oishii, based in New Jersey, replicates the Japanese climate to grow luxury strawberries all year long.
As the world’s largest indoor vertical strawberry farm, Oishii employs a fleet of robots that constantly checks temperature and humidity conditions and monitors the growth of each individual berry in order to harvest it at its peak. A box of 11 berries comes in at a whopping $50.
In February 2023, the company introduced its new varietal, the Koyo Berry, joining the Omakase Berry and bringing a new flavour profile to the table. Each tray of the luxury berries is GMO- and pesticide-free, perfectly ripe and always in season, thanks to the artificially maintained climate conditions in the vertical farm.
The company now operates three vertical farms, two in New York and one in Los Angeles. Oishii’s 74,000 sq ft Mugen Farm is the largest vertical farm in the world, combining advanced robotics and traditional Japanese farming techniques. It uses 60% less energy and 40% less water than most first-generation vertical farms, according to the company.
The company appears to be bucking the trend among other vertical farms struggling financially, perhaps thanks to its luxury price points and viral attention gleaned online.
