The Salvation Army opens a virtual thrift store inside Roblox

‘Thrift Score’ is a fully functioning virtual thrift store built inside Roblox, the gaming platform that counts Gen Z and Gen Alpha among its most devoted users.

Inside the virtual store, players can browse and pick up thrift-inspired designs for their in-game avatars, in an environment that mirrors the experience of flicking through rails in a physical store. And as in real life, proceeds go back to supporting the Salvation Army’s charitable work.

Rather than chasing younger audiences through traditional advertising or social campaigns, the Salvation Army has placed itself inside a space those audiences already inhabit. Roblox isn’t just a game, for many of its users it’s a social platform, a creative environment and increasingly a place where brand identity and self-expression play out through avatar customisation.

The thrift aesthetic is well-suited for this audience too. Second-hand style has never been more culturally prominent among younger consumers, driven by sustainability values, a taste for individuality, and the influence of resale platforms that have turned thrifting into a hobby as much as a budget decision (think Vinted, for example). Thrift Score translates that cultural currency into the virtual space and ties it to a charity with genuine community roots.
