With dating app fatigue now a very real phenomenon, the Pear Ring is a small turquoise band worn to show others you are single.
‘If 1.2 billion singles around the world wore a little green ring on their finger to show they’re single, we wouldn’t need dating apps. IRL connection is the mission,’ says Pear’s website. The start-up claims that the initial release of the ring is now 93% sold out, while its Instagram has over 230k followers. £20 gets you three of the silicon rings in different sizes, as well as access to events in your city of choice. An LGBTQ+ version of the ring is available in purple.
Research conducted by dating app Inner Circle found that 75% of single individuals in the UK would rather meet a potential partner in person. However, the study revealed that, on average, singles approach someone they find attractive in real life only once every 2.4 years. Furthermore, only 30% of respondents reported being approached by someone in the last three months. The primary reason cited for this disparity is that 61% of people feel nervous about approaching someone in real-life situations.
Designed to act as a way to start conversations, it remains to be seen whether the Pear Ring can truly disrupt the dating app industry and foster more real-life connections, but the number of people willing to give it a try shows there is a huge appetite for alternative ways to meet potential partners.
