Taobao launches AI-assisted outfit pairing system for apparel e-commerce

Alibaba-owned e-commerce platform Taobao has introduced two AI-powered tools, ‘AI-assisted outfit pairing’ and ‘AI fitting room’, designed specifically for its apparel merchants.

The AI outfit pairing tool, integrated into iFashion, a Taobao-owned fashion platform for young consumers, is capable of generating outfit combinations using input from sources including products, models and outfit scenarios. It can also create outfits taking items from different stores and categories – helping to broaden customer discovery.

The AI fitting room feature will allow users to virtually try on clothing suitable for various body types. Users can personalise their digital avatars by uploading photos and selecting their body type. The system then offers outfit recommendations based on user preferences, which users can directly purchase.

Taobao hopes that in the future, clothing purchased on the platform will seamlessly integrate into this fitting room feature, creating a lifelike ‘online wardrobe’ with 1:1 representation.
