Swedish supermarket brand Coop has started selling low-methane beef with a lower carbon footprint in its stores.

Operating under the brand name LOME, which stands for “Low on Methane”, the supermarket is offering ground beef, sirloin steak, and beef fillets that come from cows that have been fed a special seaweed based diet. According to Coop, the special diet means that the cows burped and farted less during their lifetime and thus released less methane into the atmosphere.

LOME is a collaboration between Coop, sustainable food company Protos and Swedish startup Volta Greentech, which specialises in growing seaweed.

Coop has started with a limited-edition run of LOME products to gauge interest and demand.
