Swedish alternative milk brand Sproud has become the world’s first food company to receive ISO 26000 verification, an international standard focused on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
The verification process was carried out by VERIFY Agency of Sweden, an accredited third-party organisation. The agency conducted a comprehensive review of Sproud’s sustainability and social responsibility efforts, including an on-site audit. As part of the verification, Sproud assessed how its value chain aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and identified areas where it can have the most positive impact.
Sproud places a strong emphasis on creating products with a minimal carbon footprint. The company collaborates with CarbonCloud, an independent third-party company that analyses the climate impact of each product from field to store shelves, providing climate footprint data every two months.
CarbonCloud’s data demonstrates that Sproud’s products have a lower carbon footprint, ranging between 0.26-0.38 kg CO2e/kg, compared to other leading brands in the plant-based alternative milk category. This achievement can be attributed to various factors, including the use of plant-based ingredients like yellow split peas, which require less land and water compared to other alternatives such as oats, soy, and nuts. Sproud also employs Tetra Pak packaging made from 88% plant-based material, allows for non-refrigerated transportation and distribution, and conducts European production, all contributing to its comparatively low CO2 footprint.
