French start-up Spktrl has launched a smart ring featuring a 1.5-carat lab-grown diamond that flashes in different colours to alert wearers of urgent notifications while filtering out less important messages.
Founded by Katia de Lasteyrie, a former LVMH innovation lead, the company has created a wearable tech device that’s also a luxury item of jewellery. The AI-driven Spktrl Light Ring uses personalised colour-coded signals to indicate priority levels of incoming calls and messages, highlighting key work contacts or messages from loved ones. The device’s self-learning AI adapts the colour, rhythm and brightness of notifications to match the users’ surroundings and time of day.
Most of the time, the colourless diamond remains inactive, silencing any non-urgent notifications and encouraging users to check their phones only when necessary. This approach looks to address digital overwhelm by creating a deliberate layer of friction between users and their devices. The idea is to shield users from the negative effects of digital overwhelm.
As wearable technology evolves beyond fitness tracking, products like the Spktrl Light Ring demonstrate how luxury brands can create sophisticated solutions for tackling digital wellness, maintaining aesthetic appeal and high-end jewellery aesthetics while addressing digital distraction.
