Atoms is an American ecommerce shoe startup that sells sneakers in quarter sizes that can be mixed and match to suit each foot.
The company website states: “If you’re like most humans, each of your feet comes in a different size. So do Atoms. With our unique quarter-size system, you’re perfectly fitted for wherever your mind takes you. And with a range of upcoming custom style choices, your Atoms will get even more personal.”
The first time a customer picks and orders a quarter size at wearatoms.com, the brand sends them three shoes for each foot – the one they choose, as well as the quarter-sizes above and below. The customer can then try them on and choose any two shoes, even if they are different sizes for each foot, and send the rest back for free.
The shoes come without logos and in only three colours: jet black, pure white, or black top/white bottom. Copper threads inside the shoes eat bacteria to prevent bad smells and elastic laces with oval eyelets let Atoms slip on but stay tight so they don’t need to be tied.
Customers can receive a discount on their next pair if they send in their old Atoms for donation and analysis of the insole pattern, which is used to improve the shape of future models. The full retail price is $179 for a pair.
“To make shoes better, you need to know why people wear shoes,” Atoms co-founder Waqas Ali has said. “We perfected Atoms for your everyday routine — walking, standing and commuting. You are a person not a billboard, so there’s no logo.”
