Automated retail provider Sensei has opened Dojo, the ‘most advanced autonomous store in Europe’, in Lisbon.
Billed as a fully automated superstore, the 500m2 store is the largest of its kind in Europe and serves as a testing ground for new autonomous retail innovations, although it is not open to the public. Created in collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the prototype allows for automated tracking of products served from assisted counters (with human staff), such as a bakery, butchery or fish counter, and the integration of self-service coffee and juice machines.
The store makes full use of AI, computer vision and sensor systems to track products and customer interactions across the store. The resulting data provides the retailer with incredibly detailed real-time data and insights into shopper behaviours that will help it to effectively optimise its operations and merchandising.
The store also embraces a friction-free approach, using gateless entry and automated card payment terminals which display purchases in real-time, removing the need for an app.
Sensei explains that the technology powering the store is scalable for spaces ranging from 150-1,500 m2. While this iteration is not yet open to the general public, the opening highlights how autonomous retail technology is now scaling up from small convenience locations to supermarket sizes.
