Haircare specialists Schwarzkopf have created a smart technology scanner that can produce a bespoke shampoo blend for each salon customer as they’re getting their hair cut.

Hairdressers start by using their SalonLab device to scan their customers’ hair. Infrared and visible-light sensors are used to examine the quality of the hair at a molecular level and to assess factors such as moisture levels, colour, and overall condition.

A proprietary algorithm built using machine learning then analyses the data and suggests a number of different options. Schwarzkopf says there are more than 100 options, which can be mixed on-demand by salons using an accompanying machine.

A complementary augmented reality app allows customers to visualise the different options that are suggested and virtually try on new hair colours with a 3D preview.

Niels Daecke, the head of marketing at Henkel’s (Schwarzkopf’s parent company) beauty care business states: “I think SalonLab is a game-changer. It is all about redefining the way both hairdressers and their clients experience beauty in the hair salon”.
