Announced in October 2023, the Rewind Pendant is a wearable AI device that captures everything the wearer sees, says and hears in the real world, summarising it and storing it for use at a later date.
The content is securely stored and can be searched by the user to help them recall exactly what happened in the past. The idea is to allow people to be more present in the moment, giving them the ability to recall details conveniently after the fact.
While the device certainly raises some interesting possibilities around using technology to enhance our memory and recall, it also opens up a minefield of privacy concerns. The company says that all the data gathered is stored locally on the users’ smartphone, which means the company itself can’t access it, with users able to sync their data via end-to-end encrypted cloud storage.
The company also says that the device will not record people who have not granted consent, using ‘voice fingerprints’ and ‘speaker diarisation’, although how well this will work in practice remains to be seen.
Whilst this is an exciting approach, Rewind is still in development and not yet launched commercially. It is planned to retail for $59. The brand reports that there has been so much interest, that in 2 days, they had 3 million views and thousands of pre-orders. You can reserve yours now on their website.
