French car manufacturer Renault has launched the Plug Inn app to connect people that have electric charging points with drivers needing to charge their cars.
The app effectively creates a network of public- and privately-owned charging points for Renault’s EV models that motorists can use as they move throughout the country. Members can use the app to find charging points along their route and can book charging slots ahead of time.
The app aims to make it easier for electric car drivers to drive to more remote areas where public charging points can be hard to come across. It also allows those who own their own charging points to monetise them by charging other drivers for using them.
Renault created the scheme after research found that the growing demand for electric charging points is expected to outpace the availability of public charging points during the next decade.
“We must ensure that the enthusiasm for electric vehicles is never disappointed by structural constraints,” said Arnaud Belloni, Renault’s Global Chief Marketing Officer. “On the contrary, building a community of individuals is a great opportunity to create new development models based on the values of sharing, self-help, and the circular economy.”
