Radiant Matter creates the first plant-based, plastic-free reflective sequins

Sustainable fashion materials manufacturer Radiant Matter has created the world’s first plant-based, plastic-free sequins.

Made of plant cellulose, the BioSequins shimmer like normal plastics, just without the environmental impact.

Unlike its polluting counterpart, BioSequins are non-toxic, colorfast, and pigment free. They are made of renewable and abundant plant celluloses, making the naturally shimmery sequins non-toxic, biodegradable, plant-based, and plastic-free.

The innovative production process eliminates mylar, PVC, petroleum plastics and toxic coatings from shiny garments, thus saving pollution from 1.7 million sequinned garments that go in the landfill after each festive season. The company’s ultimate goal is to shift the fashion industry’s reliance on petroleum-derived textiles and materials.

With a multitude of collaborations with companies including Stella McCartney, BEEN, and Patrick McDowell under its belt, Radiant Matter hopes to expand into everyday fashion. Until then, it will continue to research and develop innovative sustainable materials while following five of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
