QOA is a food start-up that has invented a 100% cocoa-free chocolate alternative.
While dairy-free chocolate has proliferated in line with the boom in plant-based dieting, QOA argues that it is the cocoa beans themselves that are disastrous for the environment, pointing to the fact that 24,000 litres of water are needed to produce 1kg of cocoa, 1.5 times the amount needed to produce 1kg of beef.
Using biotechnology, QOA’s method harnesses ‘state of the art fermentation and food science’ to create its cocoa-free product.
From a branding perspective, QOA leans heavily into this science-led approach, offering free samples for consumers to trial in what it calls its ‘supermassive test kits’. These contain various samples that can be tried as part of QOA’s ‘sensory experiment’.
The test kits, which can be requested for free on the brand’s website, contain a QR code on the inside of the box to trigger instructions and allow the user to offer their feedback to the brand.
