Occo is an American start-up that proposes to solve the problem of bottled herbs and spices losing their freshness with a new form of compartmentalised packaging.

The packaging is sealed with “modified atmosphere technology” to keep the spices fresh, and comes as a card with twelve chambers each filled with a quarter of a teaspoon of herbs and spices including oregano and cumin. The cards are made of recyclable aluminium.

The start-up positions itself as a better alternative to other spice brands that sell their spices in jars, since spices older than 3-6 months lose their freshness and flavour. The packaging’s technology is said to increase the rate of oxidation, making decay and flavour loss impossible as bacteria starve and die.

Occo’s Essential Collection is stocked with twelve staple spices that were selected based on frequency of use and flavour diversity. Customers will be able to repurchase individual cards on Occo’s website, at a special club rate.

The start-up also offers four Mini Collections containing three cards, focused on: Heat, Sweet, Savoury, and Earth.

Spices come from a network of organic, ethical suppliers from around the world who can deliver recently-harvested product.
