Mimica creates food label that accurately indicates product freshness

London-based packaging start-up Mimica’s Bump tag is a temperature-sensitive, tactile label that dynamically adjusts to food storage conditions, providing real-time information on food freshness.

The Bump tag works when users swipe their finger over it with some pressure. If the tag feels firm or smooth, the food or drink is fresh and good to enjoy. When there are pointy bumps, it indicates that the food or drink inside should no longer be consumed. This is thanks to the use of a bioresponsive hydrogel that reacts at the same rate that a particular food spoils. The tag is also available in a cap form for use on liquids and drinks. It is compatible with almost all food and beverage products including dairy, meat and seafood. Mimica states that the label could be used for other perishable items, such as vaccines.

The Bump tag could help to radically reduce unnecessary waste by providing an accurate indicator of freshness. With the expiry date on products being a worst-case scenario estimation, many people throw away perfectly good products before they are truly spoiled. Mimica claims that its tag can help reduce home food waste by up to 63% and retail waste by approximately 50%.
