Marks & Spencer has invested in 3D scanning start-up Texel through a joint venture with Founders Factory.

Texel’s technology can scan customers’ bodies and use the data to create a personal digital avatar, which suggests the size of clothing they should buy. The scan can be done in-store by standing inside a machine that resembles those at airport security, or it can be done at home by the customer themselves using a smartphone app, which walks them through the scanning process.

As well as providing a better service for customers, the technology has the potential to help retailers reduce the number of e-commerce orders returned – something that is hugely costly for digital retailers.
