Loop Loop develops the first plant-based aluminium dyeing process

Dutch design studio Loop Loop has developed an innovative method for colouring aluminium using plant-based pigments rather than petroleum-based ones.

Founders Odin Visser and Charles Gateau have introduced four bio-based pigment solutions that can be applied to aluminium through anodising, a surface treatment process typically reliant on petroleum-derived pigments.

Their goal is to democratise the aluminium anodising process, making it accessible to designers, makers and small-scale manufacturers, as it’s currently mostly used in mass production.

They also plan to eventually make their designs and recipes open source to enable broader adoption.
