KFC Hong Kong used an edible rice paper wrapper as packaging for its Double Down sandwich in order to reduce waste and make the eating experience less messy.

The Double Down uses two pieces of fried chicken to bookend the sandwich in place of traditional burger buns, which can make it quite difficult to eat. To combat this, KFC created what it calls the “200% edible wrapper”.

Edible rice paper is a commonly used ingredient in parts of Asia. The wrappers were printed with edible ink, which is said to include the fast food chain’s signature Zinger flavour.

KFC writes: “The Double Down is a legend in its own lunchtime – all meat, no buns. We needed to tell the public this limited-time item was back on the menu.

“With no bread to soak up all the juicy goodness, the Double Down can be a bit messy to munch. So we created a unique collection of delicious rice paper wrappers, each printed with edible ink in KFC’s signature Zinger flavour.”
