Shanghai-based bookstore chain Duoyun has opened a sprawling location in the Huangyan district in the city of Taizhou that doubles as a tourist destination and a meeting space for locals.
The 1,700 square metre space is made up of two buildings, connected by a courtyard, that offer visitors an immersive retail journey that spans five different colour-coded zones. The store includes retail space with book shelf-lined walls, a coffee hub, an exhibition space, a lecture room, and a children’s play area, moving its utility far beyond that of a traditional store. Each of these different functional areas is highlighted by a different vibrant colour – orange, green, cyan, crimson, pink and purple respectively – to help customers navigate the space.
The store, designed by Wutopia Lab, sits on the banks of the Yongning River. The exterior of the building has been wrapped in a continuous white wall of perforated aluminium that is said to create an ethereal quality to it when viewed from the river. This mythical theme continues through the use of cloud shaped doorways and motifs throughout the store.
