Swedish furniture giant IKEA has launched a consumer-to-consumer resale platform for its pre-owned furniture.
The online marketplace allows people to buy and sell their preloved IKEA furniture. First, users list their furniture and homeware by uploading pictures and setting a price, IKEA then uses AI to pull in correct measurements for the piece from its own database, along with any supporting images it can find in its catalogue. Buyers can then pick up the purchase directly from the seller, similar to platforms such as Facebook Marketplace or eBay. The seller has the option of being paid directly or with an IKEA voucher for 15% additional credit.
The initiative is part of IKEA’s wider sustainability goal of becoming a circular business by 2030. By keeping IKEA furniture out of landfills and putting it back into new homes, the company aims to reduce waste and prolong the lives of its products.
