The biodegradable GoneShells bottles can be torn up after use before being home composted, eaten or dissolved under the kitchen tap.
Swedish packaging innovations company Tomorrow Machine joined forces with juice company Eckes Granini to develop a starch-based biodegradable bottle that breaks down very quickly. Ripping up the bottles helps speed up the decomposition process.
The material is made from a combination of potato starch and other natural materials, giving it transparent and flexible qualities, as well as making it edible. The resulting film can be moulded into different shapes, such as bowls or containers, and could be used to package a variety of products, including food or cosmetics. The idea behind the packaging is to relieve pressure on recycling facilities and reduce the problems with packaging (even the recyclable kind) ending up in nature.
GoneShells presents an innovative and sustainable packaging option that has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of traditional packaging materials.
