Copenhagen tourism initiative turns green actions into cultural rewards

Copenhagen’s tourist board has introduced CopenPay, an initiative that transforms green actions into currency that can be exchanged for cultural experiences.

It’s designed specifically to address the gap between tourists’ desire to act sustainably and their actual behaviour – research uncovered that while 82% want to make sustainable choices, only 22% follow through with them.

CopenPay looks to inspire visitors to the city to make greener choices consciously by rewarding the sustainable actions they take, from cycling to using public transport, participating in cleanup efforts, or volunteering at urban farms. Each activity earns them access to a variety of experiences in Copenhagen, including guided museum tours, free kayak rental and free vegetarian lunches.

Tourists arriving at the National Gallery of Denmark with plastic waste can join a workshop to transform it into art. Similarly, those who take public transport or bike to Copenhagen’s iconic heating plant can enjoy a unique experience skiing down its rooftop slope. Through these incentives, Copenhagen hopes to encourage sustainable behaviour and promote a greener, more conscious form of tourism.

The pilot programme will run for a month from mid-July 2024.
