US fast food chain Chipotle has unveiled a fully electric ‘responsible restaurant’ designed to maximise energy efficiency.
The locations use 100% renewable energy from wind and solar, using certified renewable energy credits. The chain has announced plans for at least 100 of its 3,200 locations to utilise the all-electric set up by 2024, part of a pledge the company has made to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.
Shading is built into the building’s exterior to minimise use of air conditioning, while the restaurants will use rooftop solar panels wherever feasible. Inside, all-electric equipment and systems will replace gas powered older versions. Heat pump water heaters and smaller electric cookline and exhaust hoods will also improve energy efficiency.
The decor will also be influenced by this greener approach, with cactus leather chairs and artwork made from recycled rice husks on display. Electric vehicle charging stations will be available at selected locations.
