The 65,000 delivery workers in New York City, known as ‘deliveristas’, now have a dedicated place to take a ‘brake’ between deliveries at a branch of US fast food chain Chick-fil-A.
For a limited time throughout April 2023, Chick-fil-A riders will be able to lock their bike securely, grab a coffee, use the restroom, charge their phones and use the Wi-Fi at The Brake Room. The space at 1477 Third Ave. will be open from 11am to 7pm Monday to Saturday.
Chick-fil-A has been innovating around food delivery, opening delivery-only kitchens, expanding its virtual brands and testing autonomous delivery, but this appears to be the first time it has opened a free space in New York exclusively for delivery workers.
A 2022 report from the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection found that a whopping 124 million food deliveries were completed in the City between July 2021 and June 2022.
This initiative acts as a goodwill gesture and a way of saying thank you to delivery drivers , who often have to work long hours in relatively poor conditions with no access to toilets or refreshments. It will also resonate with members of the public who are sympathetic towards the drivers, helping to build brand equity.
