The gas station and convenience retailer is piloting smart signage at selected ExtraMile stores in the US, including AI-powered ‘digital human’ in-store helpers.
Developed in partnership with Samsung, the screens include the virtual avatar “Sam the Sommelier”, who can offer advice to customers through voice or live chat, giving recommendations for wine pairings based on their food purchases.
Customers can interact with the avatar to get some wine tasting notes, take a quiz to find their ideal bottle, and receive immediate assistance to complete their transaction, all through natural conversational language. Participating stores feature the ultra-slim 4K UHD Samsung displays, installed by Creative Realities Inc., in high-traffic areas.
The screens can also be used to display other interactive digital content including Sprinklr Social, an AI-powered social media tool which gets customers to engage via polls on their favourite flavours of a soft drink, for example, and IBM Weather, which uses real-time local weather forecasts to trigger relevant promotional offers. For example, a predicted week of sunshine ahead could trigger a car wash promotion.
Samsung is also installing FastSensor foot traffic analytics software at the selected stores to provide retailers with data on traffic flow, purchase intent, conversion rates and the highest traffic areas of the store.
