Character.AI brings characters, personalities and objects to life

Character.AI is the latest supercomputer based on neural language models, allowing users to ‘collaborate with the computer to write a dialog’, almost like writing a script.

Character.AI users can have conversations with fictional characters, celebrities, or even psychologists. Role plays and language tutors are also available on the platform. Once users pick a person or character to interact with, Character.AI will respond in the style of the selected identity and voice thoughts, opinions, and stories as the character.

Recently, venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz invested over $200m into the program. Character.AI was launched in September 2022, and Horowitz’s investment in March 2023 brought the company’s valuation up to $1 billion. The $200m investment from Horowitz signifies what’s to come for the AI sector. ‘Eighty percent of economically valuable functions will be done by AI within 20 years,’ predicts the founder of ChatGPT’s initial investment firm.

Of course, legislation surrounding AI and conversation generators has yet to be established. The question of copyright infringement arises when programs such as Character.AI use protected names, images, and personalities. News publishers are also upset that their articles are being used to train AI programs.

In consideration of legal protection and copyright laws, Character.AI places a constant emphasis on ‘Remember: Everything Characters say is made up!’ and has guardrails regarding the general theme of what characters can say.
