Carrefour launches ultra-fast BuyBye micro convenience store

European supermarket Carrefour has launched Carrefour BuyBye, an 18 square metre micro store in Belgium that promises to allow consumers to make a purchase in just 15 seconds.

Created in partnership with micro retail startup Reckon AI, the store – which sells lunch snacks, cold drinks and fruit – leverages AI to speed up the shopping process, and is targeted towards workplaces, hospitality and commuter retail.

Essentially a series of refrigerated vending machines, shoppers first need to download the app and add a payment method, after which they can open the machines to take out products and automatically checkout. The end result is a fully autonomous, cashierless store with a new set of functionalities.

Reckon AI specialises in designing micro stores equipped with the latest AI technology, helping to conceptualise and develop custom smart cabinets to meet customers’ needs – whether hot or cold. It can also retrofit existing stores and old equipment with new AI capabilities including ESL (electronic shelving labels), 10 cameras for 360 view and immediate visual recognition of product for adding items to cart and auto checkout.
