Scottish craft brewer BrewDog has launched the Boilermaker Series, a three-strong line-up of whiskies that are each paired with a different BrewDog beer.
Torpedoed Tulip is a Dutch single rye whisky that has been paired with the brand’s Dead Pony Club IPA because “with fruit at the core of both liquids…the bitterness of the pale ale is tamed by the prolific spice of this explosive whisky”.
Skeleton Key is a blended scotch paired with BrewDog’s Jet Heart Black nitro vanilla milk stout. The brand claims: “The synergy between the roasted barley and peated malt form the backbone to this Boilermaker. It’s a combination that shouldn’t work. But it does.’
The third whisky is another blended scotch named Transistor. Paired with Punk IPA, “pineapple, orange and lychee are present in both aromas”.
Each whisky was developed in partnership with a different whisky producer and the colours of each label, designed by agency LOVE, mirror the palettes used on the corresponding beers.
The Boilermaker, a shot of whisky followed immediately by a glass of beer, is not a new concept, but what is new is the same manufacturer not only creating both beverages but creating the whisky specifically to be paired with its beers.
Another noteworthy aspect of the Boilermaker Series is that the agency who developed the packaging for the three whiskies and BrewDog’s other spirits, was paid in equity rather than cash. BrewDog frequently raises cash by selling equity to its fans or ‘Equity Punks’.
