BlockBar, which refers to itself as the “world’s first direct-to-consumer NFT marketplace for luxury wines & spirits”, has collaborated with The Glenfiddich on a limited-edition run of 200 bottles of whisky to celebrate Chinese New Year.
Each NFT, which can be purchased via BlockBar’s NFT marketplace, is linked to a physical Glenfiddich 21 Year Old Gran Reserva single malt with a bottle and box designed by renowned illustrator Rlon Wang.
The NFT serves as a digital receipt verifying ownership and authenticity. It can also be used to unlock exclusive content, including a JPG of the complete artwork from Rlon Wang, individual digital illustrations of the icons used in the design and a Golden Stag GIF, which will grant them early access to the next Glenfiddich launch via BlockBar.com
Owners can hold onto the NFT, resell it or gift it to a friend through BlockBar. They can also use it to redeem the physical bottle, which will remain in optimum storage conditions until the owner asks for it to be sent to them. In this way, ownership of the physical product could change hands several times without the bottle needing to be shipped around the world.
Thus, as well as using the NFT to authenticate ownership and offer addition digital content, BlockBar is also using it as a means to streamline and simplify the logistics of owning, reselling and gifting bottles of premium wine and spirits.
The 200 Glenfiddich Lunar New Year bottles were available for purchase on BlockBar.com using either Ethereum or a credit card. They cost 0.15 ETH (Ethereum), which is the equivalent of around US$467.
