Asda has unveiled its eco-friendly concept store in Leeds, which features refill stations for an array of branded products and a focus on plastic-free produce.
Asda has worked with a number of popular brands to create its package-free and refill stations. Package-free food options include PG Tips tea bags, Taylors of Harrogate coffee beans, Kellogg’s cereals, Quaker Oats, Vimto cordial and Asda’s own pasta and rice variants.
Personal and home care brands in the refill zone include Persil laundry detergent, a retail first in the form of refill stations for Unilever brands Simple and Radox, and popular shampoo and conditioner brands.
Elsewhere in the store the fruit and vegetable aisles include 53 lines of unwrapped produce, while plastic has been removed from various products’ packaging, ranging from flowers to duvets. Multipacks that have plastic wrapping such as baked beans are not on sale.
A recycling zone includes facilities for hard-to-recycle items such as plastic toys, toothpaste tubes, crisp and biscuit packets and cosmetics containers, and the store also has a reverse vending machine for cans and bottles that will be rolled out to all stores imminently.
At George, Asda’s clothing brand, the store will showcase sustainable clothing lines and shoppers will also be able to shop from Pre-Loved, a brand making new garments out of used vintage clothing.
