Pick-up-only grocery retailer Addie’s has launched its first concept store near Boston, Massachusetts.
In place of more traditional grocer models operating a combination of online ordering, in-store shopping or direct-to-consumer delivery, Addie’s business model is designed for pick-up services only. The 22,000 sq ft store is only for stocking, storing and bagging deliveries ready for pick-up, without the need for the customer to ever set foot inside.
Opened in January 2023, the concept is designed to save customers time and money, with the parking area and drive-up experience the main point of interaction. The savings translate into higher wages for store employees, competitive prices for customers and less energy usage – Addie’s stores use just a quarter of the energy a regular supermarket does.
Addie’s recently received $10.1m in seed funding led by the Disruptive Innovation Fund, the VC arm of Rose Park Advisors.
As grocery retailers explore new models for convenience and more consumers opt to order online, pick-up only store concepts offer a flexible and affordable alternative to existing formats.
