Abysse is a limited-edition champagne aged at the bottom of the sea

Champagne brand M. Hostomme has created a limited-edition range that has spent its final year of production on the sea floor.

The process of ocean-aging is said to allow wines to mature in close to perfect conditions. According to the brand, spending a year 200 feet under the ocean’s surface allows the wine to age in total darkness at a constant temperature and air pressure.

The bottles aren’t cleaned after being reclaimed from the depths of the Celtic Sea, and so the unique aesthetic gained from the marine conditions is maintained to provide a visual marker of the special story behind the champagne.

Just 60 bottles of Abysse have been made and the range is on sale for a cool $1,900.

While we’re taking the brand’s claims that the submersion improves the production process with a pinch of salt, this is an interesting approach at injecting some theatrical storytelling into a proposition.
