Zhong Yao Tang infuses ice cream with traditional Chinese herbals

A Shanghai gelato parlour is using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) ingredients in its ice cream to create distinct flavours and provide healing qualities.

Patrons can choose from over 16 flavours of gelato, all infused with popular TCM ingredients such as smoked plum and ginger with brown sugar. Customers can also opt for high-quality TCM toppings including ginseng and caterpillar fungus. The most popular flavours offered use one of the “Eight Immortals Fruit” (key ingredients in TCM) that are said to help sore throats and coughs. The ice cream is made daily off-site so once it is sold out it is gone for the day.

As well as going viral on Chinese social media, the gelato is highly coveted amongst both the Chinese as well as foreigners. The store has begun to include English descriptions of all flavours to accommodate the needs of all the foreign customers.
