Unveiled at Google’s I/O conference in May 2024, Project Astra is Google’s attempt to create what it describes as a ‘universal AI agent’.
The assistant works in real time and can see the world, meaning it knows what things are and remembers where you left them, while also being able to answer questions and help with any other queries.
A demonstration video of an early version shows this multimodal platform being put to the test on a users’ smartphone. Astra is able to identify a speaker, find the users’ misplaced glasses and review code, all in a conversational way and via the users’ smartphone camera.
