UK-based company NatureMetrics has introduced a service designed to help companies gain a deeper understanding of their environmental impact.
Currently in its early stages of deployment, the subscription-based service enables corporations to regularly assess their sites for biodiversity and monitor any changes, whether positive or negative, resulting from their activities.
NatureMetrics employs kits designed to detect environmental DNA (eDNA) in a specific area, providing insights into the species present. These kits are user-friendly and involve collecting samples of water or soil from a location, which are then sent back to NatureMetrics for analysis.
While these kits do not provide precise population figures, they do offer information on the relative abundance of species in the area. It’s worth noting that additional fieldwork, such as wildlife observation, may be necessary to obtain a more accurate assessment of population size.
