Tech savvy consumers are using NFC (near field communication) stickers to automate a range of customisable smart home functions.
While the technology has been used commercially for several years now – for example, in contactless payments – we’re now seeing increased adoption of inexpensive NFC stickers as a customisable tool for use in the home.
The tiny devices store a microchip containing a small amount of data that allows a reader (most commonly a smartphone) to carry out a task or authenticate access. The stickers can be placed around the house and when tapped with an iPhone or Android device, they’ll allow the phone to perform the preprogrammed function.
Functions include: controlling the lights in each room to the perfect setting; granting guests access to the home Wi-Fi, setting a timer for the laundry or for a period of work focus; tracking how much water you’ve had to drink; pet trackers; linking records in a vinyl collection to the corresponding album on a streaming platform. The possibilities are endless and point to the potential for NFC tag-based smart home devices.
