Japan Airlines (JAL) is trialling a clothing rental service called “Any Wear, Anywhere”, taking the concept of packing light to a new level for international travellers.
The service allows travellers to rent sets of clothing, starting at approximately $27 for two bottoms and three tops. Reservations must be made a month ahead, with the rented clothing delivered to the customers’ hotel ahead of their arrival. It’s then available to use for up to two weeks. Once they are finished, they return the clothes to the hotel – without having to do any laundry.
Ethical Japanese brand Wefabrik provides clothing in various sizes, offering smart and casual options. The main aim is to reduce baggage weight, minimise carbon emissions and save time and effort for travellers when packing and laundering their own clothes.
Sumitomo Corporation manages reservations, delivery and laundering of the clothes, which are sourced from overstock and pre-owned items. JAL will monitor the reduction in baggage weight and corresponding carbon dioxide emissions resulting from using the clothing rental service and inform its customers accordingly. JAL claims that for each kilogram of weight reduced on a flight from Tokyo to New York, the aircraft’s carbon emissions are reduced by 0.75kg.
