The Smarter Food Company’s super soup could keep type 2 diabetes at bay

The Smarter Food Company’s Smarter Naturally Soup uses GRextra, a new non-GM strain of broccoli that contains up to five times as much glucoraphanin than traditional broccoli.

When eaten in soup form glocaraphanin is converted into its active form, sulforaphane, which is claimed to re-tune metabolism, reducing type 2 diabetes markers, reducing cholesterol, blood sugar etc and counter cellular ageing. Each portion is said to contain the equivalent nutrients from five heads of raw broccoli. Data suggests it takes about six months of consuming the soup for people to see an effect.

The lead scientist behind the product is Professor Richard Mithen, who specialises in plant genetics and crop science. Smarter Food is a commercial spin off from the UK’s Quadram Institute, which is a food and health research centre receiving funding from the UK government as well as from VCs.

At £5 per recommended dose of one bowl of soup a week this is a more affordable anti-ageing functional food product than many.
