Uzbek cafeteria Zërna replaces plastic packaging with the humble squash

While plastic packaging waste continues to be a global environmental challenge, one forward-thinking establishment is taking a stand against plastic consumption.

Zërna, a cafeteria located in Uzbekistan, has unveiled a groundbreaking yet timeless solution by introducing packaging made from lagenaria, a vegetable belonging to the squash family.

Inspired by traditional conservation methods that used pumpkins as food and spice containers, Zërna partnered with agency Synthesis to develop a sustainable alternative to plastic packaging for their dried fruits.

The lagenaria packaging offers several advantages. Firstly, it is environmentally friendly, decomposing in about a year. Secondly, its unique size and shape provide versatility, making it ideal for transportation and storage. Additionally, lagenaria exhibits high resistance to humidity and light, ensuring the quality and freshness of the enclosed products.

The initiative demonstrates that eco-friendly packaging doesn’t necessarily mean technologically advanced.
