Chinese carmaker NIO plans to introduce over 100 ‘battery swap stations’ to Europe in 2023.
With the European Union aiming to have 30 million zero-emission EVs on the roads by 2030 and planning to ban new petrol and diesel car sales from 2035, NIO’s innovative solution addresses a key concern for EV drivers – long charging times.
NIO’s ‘Power Swap Stations’ offer a game-changing approach by enabling drivers to replace depleted batteries with fully charged ones in just minutes. The autonomous process raises the vehicle, removes the used-up battery, and installs a charged one, providing up to 500km of range. The entire swap takes approximately five minutes, offering a convenient and time-efficient alternative to traditional charging methods.
With over 1,100 Power Swap Stations already in operation globally, NIO plans to expand its footprint in Europe, strategically locating stations between major cities to cater to long-distance travellers. NIO’s battery swap initiative also benefits those without access to home charging options, ensuring operational batteries are readily available.
NIO’s Power Swap Stations also use renewable energy sources and comply with stringent environmental standards. The initiative is designed to accelerate the adoption of EVs in Europe, providing a practical, efficient, and eco-friendly charging experience for drivers.
