China’s popular video-sharing platform, Bilibili, is shining a spotlight on the serene and soothing aspects of life with its captivating spring broadcast series.
Dubbed the ‘outdoor spring slow livestream’, the series takes viewers on a calming journey through four different cities over four weeks. In April 2023, the livestream treated viewers to a slow but mesmerising six-hour tour of the scenic mountains and pastures of Kashgar in Xinjiang province. Next on the itinerary was the International Kite Festival in Weifang, a city in Shandong province renowned as the birthplace of kites.
During another 10-hour livestream later in the month, audiences enjoyed appearances from popular content creators and were introduced to Bilibili’s charming ‘mini TV’ kite. The Weifang kite festival livestream gained huge traction, amassing a staggering 10 million views on the microblogging site Weibo. Bilibili’s Weibo account announced that the next destination on the tour would be Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province, famed for its pottery craftsmanship.
The concept of ‘slow livestreaming’ gained prominence in 2020 when China Central Television (CCTV) broadcasted the construction process of two new hospitals in Wuhan during the early days of the pandemic. Bilibili hopped on the trend by launching the popular ‘Midnight Song Request Station’ in May 2022, featuring classic C-pop songs and evoking the nostalgia of analogue radio.
With its spring broadcast series, Bilibili continues to captivate audiences by showcasing the beauty of a relaxed lifestyle and providing a unique blend of entertainment and tranquillity.
