Homewares giant IKEA is showcasing ‘Real Life Roomsets’, created with homelessness charity Shelter, to replicate real living conditions and raise awareness of the housing emergency in the UK. Four stores across the UK have the rooms on display.
Known for clean, well designed spaces in its stores, the styling of the spaces is made to call attention to the UK’s growing housing crisis, and is a part of IKEA’s year-long partnership with Shelter. The Real Life Roomsets show the crowded and dirty spaces of real people and families forced into the poor living conditions of temporary housing.
Studies commissioned by IKEA show that 21% of people are worried about losing their home, and 48% would struggle to find somewhere else to live if evicted. To spotlight the urgency of the housing crisis, the four room sets are located in the four cities experiencing the highest levels of homelessness in the UK. Shelter and IKEA are highlighting the stories of real people forced out of their homes to pressure the government into building 90,000 homes a year until 2030 to ensure ‘half a million people have access to a better life’.
