French company Bric à Vrac aims to reduce plastic packaging by automating the bulk buying experience. The programme was started in 2023 and is active across France.
Bric a Vrac encourages bulk-buying to reduce the harmful effects of plastic packaging. The ‘brics’, or reusable silos in the store, are easy to use. Buyers place containers under the mouth of the station and input how much product they want. Pre-programmed amounts are also provided for reference and ease.
As shoppers fill their bags or containers, they can see how much the fill costs and weighs, just like a gas pump. Bric à Vrac uses reverse logistics to ensure total traceability for shoppers. The information is accessible via QR code on the printed label.
With 80% of consumers trying to reduce their plastic waste, according to YouGov research, bulk buying can offer a tangible solution in supermarkets, with new automated systems helping to reduce the friction that has bugged previous iterations.
