Cove’s biodegradable PHA water bottles hit the shelves

California companies Cove and Erewhon teamed up to design and launch the first biodegradable water bottles.

As of December 1, 2022, the PHA water bottles will be available at Erewhon stores throughout Los Angeles, California. The bottles were named Plastic-Free Innovation of the Year in 2019, and are now hitting retail shelves for the first time.

Cove’s innovative water bottles are plastic-free, biodegradable, renewable, non-toxic, and compostable. They are made of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), which is a sustainable and naturally occurring biopolymer. The importance of PHA is its ability to biodegrade in all natural environments without producing toxic waste.

Cove considers its partnership with Erewhon to be a milestone, and hopes to expand its retail alliances to make the water bottles available to more people. They hope they can use PHA in more goods to eliminate unnecessary plastics from infiltrating and contaminating the environment.

The availability of plastic-free water bottles for consumers is a step towards a more sustainable future. As Cove partners with more retailers and other companies create similar environmentally conscious products, the aim is to decrease plastic use and wastage in the long term.
