Spotify’s AI DJ will curate a stream of songs it thinks you’ll like, and provide commentary

Spotify has launched an AI DJ that curates a stream of songs it thinks users will like based on their listening history. The AI DJ also provides ‘commentary’ on the songs it plays – just like a human radio host would do.

The feature is an extension of Spotify’s focus on personalisation, as the platform looks to keep users engaged and deliver the right piece of music at the right time. Spotify describes the accompanying automatically generated voice as ‘stunningly realistic’, aiming to emulate a human radio host rather than sounding robotic.

The voice is provided by dynamic AI voice platform Sonantic, which was acquired by Spotify in 2022, using generative AI based on OpenAI technology (ChatGPT’s parent company).

AI DJ looks across users’ listening history, starting with an old favourite and streaming a selection of songs from there, reacting to feedback.

As consumers look for ever greater levels of personalisation, generative AI can be used to provide a more individual experience and boost engagement.
