Harrods’ H Beauty launches recycling scheme for ‘unrecyclable’ packaging

Luxury retailer Harrods is set to launch a pilot cosmetics recycling scheme that will accept items of packaging that usually end up in landfill.

The H Beauty initiative sees Harrods teaming up with recycling partner MYGroup. In a first for a health and beauty retailer, the pilot will accept hazardous nail paint and fragrance bottles, which are usually considered ‘unrecyclable’.

The MyBeauty Recycle & Reward scheme will be trialled at H Beauty Milton Keynes for three months. The retailer will provide bins in-store where customers can drop their used packaging, before it is taken away to be recycled at MYGroup’s recycling facility in Hull. H Beauty sales associates will be on hand to answer any questions and monitor the type of packaging being dropped off.

MYGroup says it has invested in advanced new processes which allow it to fully extract, process and recycle the packaging and inner product. The resulting recycled materials will either be composted, repurposed, or returned to the supply chain. Alternatively, some plastic waste can be transformed into MYBoard, a material with a similar consistency to plywood, presenting a solution for previously unusable plastics.

In-store recycling schemes can make a tangible difference to consumer behaviour and help retailers to achieve their sustainability goals.
