Shanghai’s commuting mobile app rewards users for using green travel

Shanghai’s Suishenxing app is an all-in-one mobile platform for green commuting.

Launched in November 2022, the app marks a major step forward for Shanghai’s Mobility as a Service (MaaS) system. The app is the world’s first MaaS system launched by a government.

Once they’ve registered, the built-in payment service allows users to swipe their mobile for all forms of public transport in the city including buses, ferries and metro journeys. It also allows users to hail a cab from taxi company Shencheng Travel and reserve a parking space using Shanghai Parking.

The system is designed to be accessible to senior users who aren’t as technologically savvy. Elderly people who aren’t comfortable using a smartphone can give their children access to their account details, allowing them to hail taxis by pressing a button or scanning their face at locations with digital cab hailing screen services.

The app also incentivises users to take environmentally friendly forms of travel. Whenever a user takes the Metro or the bus, they receive green credits that can be used to swap gifts or play online games.

Going forward, initiatives that encourage and incentivise greener forms of transport will be key to reaching longer-term climate change targets and making positive impact on a macro level.
