WNWN (that’s Win-Win) Food Labs, a London-based food start-up that makes cocoa-free chocolate, released its new chocolate Waim! An ‘all-free’ version of the iconic European candy Daim bar, Waim! is dairy-free, gluten-free, palm oil-free, caffeine free, and vegan.
“Our chocolate habit is contributing to deforestation, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, CO2 emissions, child slavery, and unfair trade practices.” CEO and co-founder Ahrum Pak, commented. “With this new bar, we take on an emblematic candy bar without having a catastrophic impact on people or the environment,” he added.
Indeed, palm oil, a common ingredient in chocolate, is a leading cause of deforestation and CO2 emissions. Palm oil production has led to drained peatlands and illegal deforestation throughout Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa. In Indonesia, for example, millions of acres of rainforest are demolished every year for timber, palm oil production and other commercial needs.
WNWN’s cocoa-free chocolate is made with whole plant-based ingredients like British barley and carob, which are then transformed using traditional fermenting techniques similar to beer and cheesemaking.
The company’s plans include exploring foods like coffee, tea, and vanilla to make future-proof versions resilient to changing climates, biodiversity loss, and unethical and unsustainable farming and labour practices.
